Ghanaian female comedian Heiress Jacinta born Jacinta Asi Ocansey has said that the reason why Ghana’s comedy is not widely accepted is that its pacesetters did not start off well.
According to her, the first set of contemporary Stand Up comedians were said to be not funny because Ghanaians were used to the Nigerian style of Comedy.
Speaking on eTV Ghana’s celebrity show “The Late Nite Celebrity Show” Jacinta said, “I’m talking about the David Oscar’s and the DKB’s of today, when they started it didn’t really go down well with the people.
Ghanaians did not accept their style of comedy they were used to the Nigerian Comedians so if you do any comedy that is not in pidgin, it is not seen as funny.”
She added, “But now Ghanaians are beginning to understand the style of comedy here so now it is gaining its roots.”
Jacinta so far is the only female comedian in the young but growing Comedy Industry in Ghana. She has attained some bragging rights including Ghana Tertiary Awards 2016 Most Influential Student Comedian, Most Popular Student and Most Entertaining Student.
